FORMULA D
9.2006 Englishtown, NJ
Formula Drift hit the Garden State this year and
showed that Drifting as a competitive sport is really growing at breakneck
speed. Comparing last year's NJ event to this year, one can tell that Drifting
is something that needs and eventually will be taken seriously by the other
forms of auto racing throughout the world. From the looks of it, if Drifting
keeps up it's rate of growth it will surely give the other sports a serious run
for their money...and fans. I attended Formula D '05 in April at Wall Stadium
and this year's event in September had to have been twice as big; the stands
were completely filled from end to end, the weather was warmer which may have
resulted in greater attendance, but it seemed like those who made it out to the
show were true drifting fans and had greater knowledge of teams, drivers and
Drifting techniques. Major companies have definitely taken notice of Drifting
and are putting major money and effort into building and supporting drift teams
and developing parts that cater to the sport. There have been mixed feelings
about the big companies getting into the drift game however, as some enthusiasts
feel it will commercialize a sport that traditionally is supposed to be
something that the everyday guy can compete in and find success without having a
major monetary commitment attached to it. On the other hand the “Big Guys” are
bringing exposure and support to drifting which in turn will attract more people
and fans.
The drivers and teams make themselves available to fans directly, and don't have
that celebrity attitude that you find in other sports. These guys are down to
Earth dudes...and gals too...who sit for autograph sessions between qualifying
and the start of the official race, they are more than glad to take photos with
their fans and have a generally all around good time while doing what they love.
And that's what it all boils down to...having fun on a Saturday afternoon while
taking your car to it's limits of traction all the while looking ultra-cool
doing it. So if you didn't make it out this year...you need to get your ass over
to a drift show and check it out...I guarantee you'll have a great time.
